I get together with Jason Miles from Rend Lake Fishing Trips and Mafia Rods for an afternoon of crappie fishing the buck brush at Rend Lake in Southern Illinois. Buck Brush fishing is somewhat unique to Rend Lake and Jason has developed a line of rods specific for this technique.
Each year with the spring rains, Rend Lake rises above it’s normal pool, flooding the shorelines with a few feet of extra water. The crappie get into the flooded brush to spawn, and it is a good time! This year has been a bit drier than normal, so there isn’t much water in the brush to work with. But we did find a couple of spots!!
Not just any fishing rod is up to the task of yanking fish out of the brush, and this is where Mafia Rods 11 foot heavy cover rods were born! We had a great time and as always I learned a bit! The best time of year for this technique is Mid April though the month of May.
