I found the ruins of the old kitchen that was built to feed the loggers from the 1920’s thru the 50’s. I will clean it up and cook up a great lunch on some cast iron. I found a bit of history from the days when the logging companies came for treasure hidden in the swamps. This was the center of logging the old growth cypress that were thousands of years old. Back in those days the swamps were considered useless and the old trees were hard to get to. But tough men and the Cummer Lumber Company came to Florida and harvested the huge cypress trees with axes and hand saws that grew along the major rivers. Trains would then pull them out to the mill in Lacoochee to saw them into lumber. Those days are gone now, but a few of the trees survived and the forest has recovered. However, it will be a thousand years or more before it will be like it was before.
