Travel Tips for Staying Healthy and Well

Anyone who has ever had to travel knows the fear of getting sick away from home and when you have important meetings scheduled. Though you may not be able to avoid getting sick entirely, you can certainly improve your chances of staying healthy by following some common-sense advice. So here are some tips and resources to get you started, courtesy of My 724 Outdoors.

Be Prepared Before You Go

Taking along medicines, both prescription and over-the-counter, is a must. You may be traveling off the beaten path with no access to a pharmacy, so stock up on your regular meds as well as painkillers, anti-nausea medication, and allergy meds, along with topical creams and ointments if you plan on being outdoors.

A first aid kit that includes bandages of all sizes, antibiotic cream, a thermometer, tweezers, alcohol wipes and peroxide, safety pins, small scissors, and a cold pack can be a lifesaver.

Also, book accommodations that offer a fitness center. But if that’s not possible, check with the gym that you usually attend – national chain gyms often have locations in every state. Another idea is to book a hotel in a pedestrian-friendly area of town. By walking everywhere, you’ll get in some extra movement each day.

Stay Healthy

One of the most important things to do when traveling is to stay hydrated. It is easy to forget about drinking water when we are busy, but it's one of the best ways to stay healthy. Drink plenty of water throughout your day. Purchase a well-insulated and leakproof water bottle to avoid having it spilling on your clothes or any important documents and products.

It’s not always easy to find healthy options in restaurants when traveling, so carry snacks with you like nuts, dried fruit, and protein bars for when you're hungry to avoid snacking on sweets that will cause your blood sugar to crash. Ask for the restaurant’s menu ahead of time to know what their options are and if they have any healthier choices. If you are at a fast food place, try ordering from the side menu, such as salads or sandwiches without mayo. If you are at a sit-down restaurant, order soup instead of an appetizer or an entrée that has meat in it. Order vegetables instead of fries, and ask for olive oil and vinegar for your salad dressings rather than butter or ranch dressing. There are apps that you can download ahead of time that can help you find healthy options near your location.

Make sure you’re rested. Plan your trip so that you can have time to adjust to the new time zone and check that your hotel has blackout curtains. Take melatonin supplements before bedtime if you have trouble sleeping at night. Try to maintain the same schedule as home by going to bed and waking up at the same time every day. And finally, take a break from technology an hour or two before bedtime so that you don't become too stimulated before going to sleep.

Digitize Medical Records

When traveling, it is important to have easy access to your medical information in case of an emergency. One convenient way to do this is by saving your medical records as PDFs. PDFs allow you to carry your medical information with you without the need to carry around physical copies, which can be especially beneficial if traveling abroad. Additionally, having a digital backup of your medical records provides peace of mind in case your physical records are lost or damaged while traveling. Simply use this PDF file converter to save other files as PDFs.

Avoid Germs

To avoid catching germs when traveling, be aware of the risk factors. It’s possible to avoid the spread of germs and keep your immune system healthy by being careful. The first thing you should do is practice good hygiene. This includes washing your hands with soap and water before eating, drinking, or touching your face. You should also bring hand sanitizer with you for those times when you can't wash your hands immediately. When staying in hotels, wipe down the room’s door handle before touching it with a pocket sani-wipe, then do the same with the room's bathroom handle.

Traveling can bring amazing experiences. You get to see new sites, experience new things, and enjoy visiting with people you may only know through emails. By taking the right precautions like eating right, getting exercise, and digitizing your medical records, you should be able to enjoy your trip in good health.
